General description

GeoDataset name: Air pressure

2. Data on atmospheric pressure.

This description below is based on the original one from AARI (See Expl.doc). The source tables referred to are included in the \INSROP_GIS\Sourcedata\AARI-FNI 1996\AirPressure folder, while the zip files are included in the \INSROP_GIS\Sourcedata\AARI-FNI 1996 folder.

A brief description of the initial data

As initial data, the data sets of surface atmospheric pressure observations at synoptic times (00, 12 hours GMT) from the US National Center for Atmospheric Research for the period 1964 to 1989 and from the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia for the period 1989-1994 in the grid points with a spatial resolution 2°.5N x 5°E were employed. In total, there are 385 points in the prescribed area (E40-E210/N60-85).

For estimating whether the data sets under consideration are adequate, a comparison of statistical characteristics calculated on their basis for one and the same year 1989 was performed. Also, mean monthly, maximum and minimum values of atmospheric pressure for the period 1966 to 1994 for three grid points were compared to the corresponding data of the meteorological stations located near these points. The analysis of the comparison results has shown the data sets of the US NCAR and the Hydrometcenter of Russia to be in good agreement: the correlation coefficient between the maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviations was 0.99. The correlation coefficient at the stations and at the grid points was 0.96 for mean monthly values, 0.95 for the maximums and 0.94 for the minimums.

A brief description of the processing method

The statistical characteristics were calculated by means of a conventional method. Based on surface pressure values for each of the grid points, the pressure minimums and maximums, mean monthly values and their standard deviations were determined for each month.

A brief description of the data transferred

The co-ordinates of the grid points are presented in the form of the ASCII file (tbl_03.txt) containing Table 3. The record of Table 3 includes the following fields: No. of the square; latitude of the grid point (degrees); longitude of the grid point (degrees). The results of statistical calculations are presented in the form of 31 ASCII files (tbl_04.txt, tbl_05.txt, ...tbl_34.txt) containing Table 4 . The record of Table 4 includes the following fields: No. of the point; year; month; maximum; mean; minimum; standard deviation. The files containing Table 4, are compressed using pkzip software and are presented in the form of four files: p_st6473.zip (data for 1964-1973), p_st7483.zip (data for 1974-1983), p_st8493.zip (data for 1984-1993) and p_st94.zip (data for 1994).
