General description

Table name: Fast Ice Breakup - Frequency of occurrences

This table is created from the Tbl_40.txt and Tbl_41.txt files as prepared by INSROP Project I.4.2 as part of INSROP Phase 2. The table records refer to the center point of the coastal ice regions included in the Tbl_39 shapefile set, which is a part of the dataset provided by INSROP Project I.4.2.

Dates of landfast ice breakup

The final landfast ice breakup date corresponds to the time when landfast ice is divided into drifting ice over the entire region. Along the NSR, 19 regions were defined differing in the character of landfast ice formation and breakup /INSROP Working Paper no. 10-1995/.

The series of landfast ice breakup dates in each region were obtained from data of ice airborne and satellite observations for the period 1949-1997. Based on these data, average dates and frequency of occurrence of 10-day periods were calculated and the earliest and the latest dates were selected.
