Three Valued Ecosystem Components were selected for the marine birds; Seabirds, Marine wildfowl and Waders in feeding and resting areas.

The VEC seabirds consists of species in the orders Gaviiformes, Procellariiformes and Pelecaniformes, and in the suborders Lari and Alcae in the order Charadriiformes. The species were data have been collected includes Black-legged Kittiwake, Ivory Gull and Brünnichs Guillemot.

The VEC Marine wildfowl consists of species in the order Anseriformes and includes both true marine species as well as species living close to the sea only parts of the year. The species were data have been collected includes Emperor Goose, Barnacle Goose, Common Eider, King Eider, Spectacled Eider, Steller's Eider and Long-tailed Duck.

The VEC Waders in feeding and resting areas include species in the suborder Charadrii in the order Charadriiformes. The NSR area is inhabited by many wader species that often have special feeding and resting areas along the NSR, which they use in connection with migration.

For further documentation see INSROP Working Paper No. 60 - 1996 (Selection of marine birds valued ecosystem components and description of impact hypotheses in the NSR), INSROP Working Paper No. 99 - 1998 (Northern Sea Route Dynamic Environmental Atlas) and INSROP Working Paper No. 123 - 1998 (The Distribution, Population Status and ecology of Marine Birds selected as Valued Ecosystem Components in the Northern sea Route Area.)

The definition of the content in the fields [Status] are different from species to species and are defined in the legend-files <species>.avl. The data set containes information on number of birds, date of presence, observation dates, reliability (see lookup-table rel.lut) and reference to the data observation.
