8. OCCURRENCE FREQUENCY OF ENCOUNTER WITH RIDGES.

This description below is based on the original one from AARI (See Expl.doc). The source tables referred to are included in the Data_8.xls spreadsheet in the \INSROP_GIS\Sourcedata\AARI-SOF 1996\tables folder.

A brief description of initial data.

The calculated data on the number of ridges per 1 km of the route were obtained on the basis of initial information, which is described in detail in Item 7.1 (specialised charts of the amount of hummocked ice cover).

A brief description of the processing/analysis method.

For estimates of the number of ridges per 1 km of the route based on the data on the amount of hummocked ice cover, the stochastic relations presented in Folomeyev and Bogomolova (1987), Romanov (1991), Smirnov (1993), Hibler et al. (1972), Lewis et al.(1993), Wadhams (1995), can be used. We have used the methods described by Smirnov (1993). These methods are based of generalising about 30 000 observations performed in the NSR regions.

A brief description of the data transferred.

Data on the number of ridges per 1 km of the route are presented in the form of the ASCII file (tbl_13.txt) containing Table 13. Table 13 consists of the records including the following fields: No. of the point; month; the number of observations; the occurrence frequency (%) of the range 0-5 km-1; the occurrence frequency of the range 5-41 km-1; the occurrence frequency of the range 10-41 km-1; the occurrence frequency of the range 20-41 km-1; the occurrence frequency of the range 30-41 km-1; mean, minimum. maximum.
