FNI Researchers Publish Comprehensive Analysis of
International Environmental Agreements
(05.12.2011) Why are some environmental problems dealt with
successfully, while others are ignored? What makes for an efficient and
effective international environmental agreement?
These key
questions are analysed in an ambitious new book written by 11 researchers from
the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and published in the series Routledge Research
in Environmental Politics.
The 11 authors are all experts on
various sectors of international environmental cooperation. Their individual
chapters are grouped in three parts: air (climate, ozone, air pollution), water
(law of the sea, marine pollution, fisheries management) and land
(biodiversity, agricultural plant diversity, forest management).
Each
chapter presents the international cooperation mechanisms existing in the
sector, and examines what has been achieved, and why.
Drawing on the
analyses in the individual sector chapters, the three editors
Steinar Andresen, Elin Lerum Boasson and
Geir Hønneland seek to identify
the characteristics of efficient, effective international environmental
agreements. The volume concludes with research-based recommendations on how to
shape future environmental cooperation for best results.
