Can the Arctic fuel the green transition without harming its people and environment?

“It is a kind of paradox. To achieve the green transition, we need a large number of minerals – but most processing is done in China. How do we reduce this dependence without creating new problems?” says Davor Vidas, research professor at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute. “The question is how it is possible to have a sustainable exploitation of critical minerals in the Arctic without harming local and Indigenous populations,” adds Gørild Merethe Heggelund, who leads the new Nordic research project CRIMINA.
