The Development Fund (DF) is among the leading agencies worldwide collaborating with partners in developing countries to promote and enhance the sustainable use of crop genetic diversity as a means for food security, poverty alleviation and development. Projects on agrobiodiversity supported by the DF have served as examples of best practices in different contexts and provide valuable learning possibilities for actors engaging in this area, both in terms of their achievements and challenges.

The DF has commissioned an evaluation from the FNI to assess the overall impact of the DF community-based agrobiodiversity management programme implemented from 2009 to 2016 in Asia and Africa, with case studies from Nepal and Ethiopia.

At the core of the evaluation are the community seed banks which have been developed to serve as platforms for seed and food security, poverty alleviation and development.

When assessing these community seed banks two years after the end of the programme: What is the state of their operations today? How have they impacted on the lives of the people in the target groups in terms of food security, poverty alleviation and development?  How did they respond to the needs of the target groups and the development strategies of the countries? How did the community seed banks affect the communities at large? What are the prospects for continuation of the achievements, and to what extent are the objectives of the programme relevant today? These are among the questions posed from the Development Fund.

The findings will serve as a basis for carving out the future strategy of the Development Fund, and as a documentation of the achievements of the Development Fund and its partners with regard to agrobiodiversity management so far.

Project Period: 2018-2019
