Knausgaard and Class

In Iver B. Neumann (ed), Knausgaard in Context. Scandinavian University Press, 2025, pp. 148-166.

This chapter gives an overview of Norway’s classed history, where the bourgeoisie has always been modern Norway’s leading class. Knausgaard, with his petit bourgeois family on his father’s side and a family of farmers on his mother’s side, is typical of a group of people who are taking over the class hegemony in Norwegian cultural life. The chapter reads the novels as documentation of this rise and suggests that its popularity in Norway may be due to reader recognition of this fact.
