Towards a Legal Regime for Arctic Navigation

In Svein Vigeland Rottem and Ida Folkestad Soltvedt (eds), Arctic Governance: Law and Politics. Volume 1. London, I.B. Tauris, 2017, pp. 133-149.

This chapter focuses on one issue that in the near future may threaten to alter the face of the Arctic: increased pressure resulting from the growth of commercial shipping. In 2002, the International Maritime Organization adopted the 'Guidelines for Ships Operating in Arctic Ice-covered Waters. This chapter examines how these Guidelines came into being, analyzes key elements and structure of the regulations and potential repercussions of a binding regime.
