Arctic Coast Guards: Why Cooperate?

In Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv, Marc Lanteigne and Horatio Godfrey Sam-Aggrey (eds), Routledge Handbook of Arctic Security. Routledge, 2020, pp. 283-294.

This chapter sets out to explain the role of Arctic coast guards in the Arctic. How have states developed cooperation to solve on a number of pressing concerns in the Arctic? How is cooperation influencing the states partaking and shaping outcomes between them? This chapter will explore various low-level Arctic cooperative activities. This can in turn help us better understand the Arctic governance system in general, as well as why the role of coast guards is on the rise in northern waters.
