China is among the non-Arctic states that have shown interest in the Arctic. It has presented itself as a ‘near-Arctic’ country and obtained permanent observer status on the Arctic Council in 2013. Some observers have expressed suspicion about China’s intentions in the Arctic. Others, however, have been enthusiastically welcoming – like the Icelandic government under President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. In this chapter, I present one case that has featured both reported and rumoured Chinese involvement: the Isua iron-ore mine project on Greenland. My aim is to describe the events as closely to what happened as possible, differentiating between alleged and actual Chinese connections.
