This project focuses on the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Africa and internationally, with emphasis on its provisions on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the utilization of these resources (ABS). It is a contribution to the multi-donor ABS Capacity Development Initiative aimed at building human and institutional capacity in African countries in this regard.

Linked to this project, the overall goal of FNI's participation is to improve the knowledge management and knowledge foundation related to working on ABS in Africa and internationally. The following five particular research needs will be addressed with the purpose of enabling effective implementation of ABS in Africa and at the international level:

  • ABS interfaces with other issue areas and challenges for policy coherence.
  • Analysis of ABS experiences in Africa.
  • Options for African impact on the negotiations of the international ABS regime and for substantive achievements regarding benefit sharing.
  • User country measures.
  • Analysis of the tools of the ABS initiative itself.
