I am an international lawyer with a special interest in the law of the sea, a field in which I have been involved since the mid-1980s. My approach to issues of international law has been increasingly characterized by interdisciplinary studies that combine law and natural sciences. My current research interests within international legal theory include, especially since 2009, the relationship of the Anthropocene concept with the development of international law and, regarding the law of the sea more specifically,  the implications of sea-level change, maritime delimitation issues, and the history of the law of the sea – although my current research is also future-oriented. Beyond studies of law of the sea questions with global implications, as necessitated by the World Ocean, I have devoted considerable attention to certain regions and regional developments, such as the Antarctic and the development of the Antarctic Treaty System, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, especially recent legal and policy issues concerning the Adriatic Sea.
